Prosecutor General’s Office Training
A training session was conducted in Malé for 25 prosecutors from the Prosecutor General’s Office as part of the IOM’s Comprehensive Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons in the Maldives project. The training reviewed topics such as: the basic concepts of human trafficking, the trends of trafficking in persons in the Maldives and the challenges faced. The primary objective was to familiarize participants with the national TIP legislation by revising it in depth and noting the difference between the international interpretation of the crime of trafficking and the national Maldivian definition; participants were informed of how this might change if the Maldives’ ratifies the Palermo Protocol and to remain vigilant on how this may progress. A presentation by the head of the Maldives Police Service’s Human Trafficking Unit also opened new communications with the Prosecutor General’s Office and paved the way for future collaboration.
