The Maldives is a major country of destination for labour migration, particularly of lower skilled labour, who contribute to the hospitality and tourism sectors. Many migrant workers in this category are vulnerable to unethical recruitment and employment practices.
IOM supports the Government of Maldives in its efforts to reduce the vulnerability of migrant workers, including provision of language training programmes for frontline officials, and contribution to initiatives to regularize undocumented migrants.
IOM is in the process of establishing a Migrants Resource Centre to provide direct referral assistance to non-governmental service providers or relevant authorities for legal, medical, or psychosocial support.
Additionally, IOM is a leading partner of the Government of Maldives in its efforts to combat trafficking in persons, particularly in relation to labour exploitation. Through a rights-based approach, IOM contributes to building capacity and raising awareness among public and private stakeholders.
